Boko Haram: NSCIA charges FG, muslims

Published by Tribune on Fri, 27 Jan 2012

The Nigerian Su-preme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), on Thursday, called on the Federal Government and Muslims to buckle up towards the eradication of the Boko Haram sect in the country.A statement signed by the Secretary General, NSCIA, Dr Abdulateef Adegbite, stated that the destructive activities of the dreaded sect had dented the image of the country internationally.Adegbite lamented that the actions of Boko Haram were inhuman and unacceptable to Muslims.According to him, 'it is necessary to reiterate emphatically that the claims of the killer group that they are acting in the interests of Muslims and Islam are penalty false. It is now crystal clear that these hard-faced rebels have declared war on all Nigerians.'This is why it is misguided for some Christian leaders to call for reprisal against Muslims just because Boko Haram targeted a church near Abuja on Christmas Day last year, irresponsibly killing many worshippers.'He, however, called on all citizens, irrespective of their religion, to steer clear of evil thought and not to be a source of discord but a means of mutual understanding. He added that Nigerian Muslims should collaborate with their counterparts, saying' we call on peace ' loving Nigerian Muslims to collaborate with their Christian counterparts in embracing peace and dialogue to enhance National Security'.NSCIA urged the Federal Government to continuously reassure Nigerians of their resolve and capacity to deal with the critical situation. He also noted that the scourge of violence as perpetrated by BokoHaram had become dreadful, frightening and seemingly uncontrollable adding that the need has obviously arisen to seek divine intervention.'It is imperative for the Federal Government to be magnanimous and adopt a carrot and stick policy towards the rebels so as to resolve the seemingly intractable Boko Haram bloody crises.'The moderate ones among them should be encouraged to engage in a round table dialogue with the representatives of the FederalGovernment who will listen to their grievances and recommend those that can be accepted as the Constitution and the law may permit.'Those hard-line Boko Haram elements that are bent on pursuing violent agenda should be sought out and dealt with according to the law', he said.
