Ipodo, Adealu residents laud efforts to clear waterways

Published by Tribune on Fri, 27 Jan 2012

Residents of Ipodo in Ikeja Area and Adealu area on Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, have expressed satisfaction with the efforts of both the Lagos State and Federal Government towards ensuring flood-free rains in 2012.It will be recalled that both Ipodo area in Ikeja and Adealu witnessed acute flooding which washed away parts of Lagos in July last year. The good news now is that the state government through its Emergency Flood and Abatement Department of the Ministry of Environment, is doing everything possible to curb the menace of flooding in Ipodo area of Ikeja this year.To achieve this, some workers of the ministry were seen clearing the water ways in the area in preparation for the rains.A community leader in the area, Alhaji Adepoju Aremu, told Community News that the residents were happy that the state government was making efforts to forestall the occurence during the coming rainy season.'Actually, we were expecting the state government to expand the drainage to accommodate the high volume of water during rainy season, but we are very happy that they are clearing the waterways. Anytime from now, we shall be expecting rains and it will be difficult to do the clearing while the rains are on'.The community leaders had suggested that the state government should expand the drainage around Ikeja to put a final stop to the problem of flooding in the area. When Community News visited the Ipodo area, off Toyin Street, some workers were seen clearing the drainages. Some of the residents called on the workers to ensure that the debris removed from the gutters were carried away, so as to prevent them from falling back into the gutters. Also, in Adealu area in Dopemu area of Lagos on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, men of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) were seen constructing a completely new drainage to take care of flood in the area .Some of the residents commended the Federal Government for the action, 'We are very happy to see the men of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) working here. The efforts would help to curb the menace of flooding in this community. I don't pray to witness the type of experience we had last year', Mr. Mary Uche, a trader in the area, told Community News.
