AFTER the resumption of schools following the nationwide strike over fuel subsidy, winners have started emerging in the Lagos Guaranty Trust Bank Principal's Cup.Four teams competed in district two, which was won by CMS Girls and Alapere Comprehensive Senior High School, which will then proceed to the final of the girls' event, while the boys' division produced Ajayi Crowther Senior Memorial Grammar School and Alapere Senior Comprehensive High School as finalists.After a hard fought encounter, CMS Girls lifted the trophy in the district after beating Alapere 1-0 in the final. But the Alapere boys' team was able to make up for its female team's misfortune with a 6-5 victory over the boys from Ajayi Crowther.Some matches will also be played in the remaining five districts, and winners will represent their districts in the state finals scheduled to hold next month. Also, February 2 has been fixed tentatively for the state finals draw.Meanwhile, sponsor of the tourney, GTBank, has said the competition goes beyond football but also serves as a veritable platform to mentor youths and encourage them to pursue their dreams with the introduction of Tournament Ambassador's Programme (TAP) and Camp GTBank.The General Manager, GTB Communications and External Affairs, Lola Odedina, disclosed that there has been conscious effort to restore the glory of the championship.Odedina said recently at a press briefing ahead of the kick-off of Season Three: 'The journey so far has been worthwhile and we sincerely appreciate the Lagos State Government for the opportunity to partner it in bringing back the glory days of the Principal's Cup, and for its unwavering commitment to the successful completion of two highly remarkable seasons.'According to the bank official, the passion for youth development and grassroots football inspired the company's investment in the competition. Aside the technical know-how of the Ministry of Education, this year's tourney will also involve the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development.
