Airlines suspend payment of FAAN charges

The ongoing muscle flexing between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and one of its concessionaires, Maevis,reached its peak at the weekend with the Nigerian airlines under the aegis of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) directing its members to stop payment of charges by FAAN to the concessionaire which has been collecting the charges.The directive by AON is the fallout of the unresolved differences between the authority and the concessionaire on revenue generation and the alleged termination of the appointment ofthe concessionaire.The airline operators acting on the rumour that the concessionaire had been stopped from collecting FAAN charges had requested FAAN to forward the termination letter to them seeking details of the termination and insisting that until that was done, their members should stop all payments to the agency.The Federal Government had penultimate week, given the two parties two months within which to review all grey areas in the agreement signed following allegations and counter allegations by FAAN and Maevis over breach of agreement.The decision of the operators to withdraw payment for landing and parking charges, Passenger Services Charge (PSC) until the matter was resolved would temporarily hamper FAANs revenue to the tune of N2 billion.There are indications that foreign airlines may equally withhold payment for charges rendered by the aviation agency, pending the time the matter is resolved.
