How The Animal In You Inspires Greatness, Downfall

Published by Guardian on Sat, 28 Jan 2012

UNLIKE the attributes of animals that are often attributed to Man, in The Animal in You by Taiwo Emmanuel and Olayiwola Awakan, there is an attempt to look at numerous positive traits of animals that heroes, martyrs, achievers have unconsciously deployed to enhance their greatness, thereby, confirming the notion that attributes of some animals could be imbibed for a fulfilled life. With a glossy cover that reveals the uniqueness of animals, the book is divided into four chapters with an additional puzzle to keep reader's instinct awake on the positive attributes of animals that can be explored for human survival and success. In the first chapter, the authors painstakingly understudy the concept of animal, defining it as any living creature including human being. However, man is described as a higher animal. Though, he shares some characteristics with them, he does not exemplify them in the same manner. Man is made up of the spirit, the soul and the body. The lower animals are made up of body, life and brain. While in the second chapter, the book takes a look at positive traits of animals such as Butterfly, Dove, Hawk, Eagle, Snake, Ant, Spider, Vulture, Lion, Frog, Lizard, Bee, Mosquito, Chameleon, Dog, Cockerel, Parrot and Dolphin. These traits, the authors assert are also common in human beings. The chapter also presents some 'detestable animal qualities in page 60, purposely to curtail any individual with excesses of such qualities.'The third chapter by Awakan view-finds heroes, dead and alive who have or are on history pages in political affairs making positive changes. The party of the animals that aided their greatness are analyzed thoroughly for emulation. The book also informs that education is not an assurance for greatness, that the reader needs to study the act of greatness, and the various struggles-free techniques that aided their triumph over challenges that political leaders, entrepreneurial and influential activists are known for.Just as survival is a fight for self, regardless of status, stages in life, age, sex, religion, geographical location to mention a few, the fourth chapter examines the attributes of animals necessary for survival at home; in school among folks and superiors; and in the labour market for due acceptance.Furthermore, a special addendum is the inculcation of The Animal In You puzzle designed to exercise the reader's intellectual alertness on the positive attributes of animals discussed in the previous chapters. The Animal In You delivers its message clearly as every page poses a motivational drive worthy of sprouting a giant in the reader. Animals are motivational factors; it is only when human perspective towards them is pessimistic that the reader may not see anything good in them. The authors remark, 'We therefore beseech you that each time you are in close range with animal, think of what can learn from it and not how to slaughter, chase, throw stones at or relate its negative traits to your naughty friend''The book is a well-researched work that will lead the reader to further experiment some of the issues raised. The use of simple English will certainly enhance comprehension and internalization of some of the norms and values preached in the book. It also enjoys good packaging.
