Fear Grips Nsukka Residents As Police Arrest Suspected Boko Haram Members

NSUKKA in Enugu State was soaked in fear yesterday following arrest of 25 persons suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect by the police.Also arrested were the driver and conductor of the commuter bus.The suspects who were travelling from the north in a commercial Nissan bus marked XA 581 MRD with inscription 'Zamfara State Government' were arrested at the Opuje Junction in Nsukka, Enugu state at about 9 am.On interrogation, however, the men who claimed to be hunters from Zamfara State and had several bags and other substances, claimed they were on hunting expedition to Uzo-uwani in Nsukka.When their bags were searched, objects including 19 dane guns, chemicals, electric cables, twelve machetes, five axes, seven knives as well as unexpended ammunition were discovered to have been concealed in a fertilizer bags which was also loaded with food stuff.The Commissioner of Police, Dana Zumi Job has ordered immediate transfer of the suspects to Enugu for further investigationsConfirming the arrest yesterday, State Police Public Relations officer, Ebere Amaraizu, said that the command would not take anything to chance, stressing that thorough investigation would be conducted to ascertain the true mission of the group in Enugu.He said: 'They were intercepted along Okuje-Nsukka road in a commuter bus with registration number Zamfara XA 581 MRD and on close and careful interrogations, they revealed that they were coming from the northern part of the country and were heading to Uzo-uwani in Enugu State for hunting expeditions, having claimed to be hunters.'Recovered inside the bus are 19 dane guns, twelve machetes, five axes, seven knives and sacks containing food stuff.'Amaraizu urged the people of the state to furnish the police with useful information that could lead to reduction of crime in the state.
