Godly FearMemory Verse: 'Thou standest by faith. Be not high minded but fear.' (Romans 11:20)Bible Passage: Acts. 19:11-20FEAR is generally regarded as a negative emotion. It hinders good thinking necessary for sound judgment. It paralyses. It is one of the favorite weapons of Satan. It torments (1John 4:18).God says, 'Fear not' when angels appear or when He is giving an important assignment or revelation (Gen. 15:1). Fear is a warning device: a safety valve. There is bad fear and good fear. God will help us differentiate and deliver us from the spirit of fear.OutlinesGodly Fear:Faith banishes fear and so does perfect love (1John 4:18). Every true child of God has nothing to fear (Isaiah 41:10). Fear came with sin. Adam was the first person to experience fear (Genesis 3:10). He sinned and said, 'I was afraid.' The Just shall live by faith (Hebrews 10:38). The righteous is as a bold as a lion (Proverbs 28:1). The only thing a child of God should fear is sin and eternal damnation (Matt 10:28). This should keep us on the straight and narrow way (Isaiah 8:13). Without the reverential fear of God, we are capable of great depths of depravity (Gal. 5:19; Mark 7:22). It is the fear of God that causes us to repent, restitute and stay in line. Sinners should fear (Matt. 10:28).Sinner's Fear:Sinners are tormented by fear and dread of the future (Mark 5:7; Rev 9:5). They are in a permanent state of fight or flight because of the consequences of their sin (Jonah 1:3). Adulterers are afraid their spouses will commit adultery, murderers are constantly watching out for agents of death and assassins, thieves are always watching over their shoulders for armed robbers, and ritualists are in constant torture by evil spirits. Drunkards have woe, sorrow, contentions, unexplained wounds and redness of the eyes (Prov. 23:29).Conclusion:Godly fear is meant to guide and protect. Bad fear is destructive. May we experience the former and not the latter, in Jesus' name.
