IN 2 Kings 6:8-23, we are told the story of how the King of Syria sent soldiers to attack Elisha because he had been helping the King of Israel. In 2 Kings 6:15, Elisha's servant woke up to find the city surrounded by horses and chariots. The sight of the soldiers brought fear into his mind and he was instantly discouraged. He felt all was over because the enemy had surrounded them and there was no way out of the predicament. Elisha however responded to his servant's cries with reassurance.2 Kings 6: 16-17 states, 'Don't be afraid, 'the prophet answered. 'Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.' And Elisha prayed, 'Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.' Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.'The chariots of fire were not around the whole environment, only around Elisha. This means that before the enemy could touch Elisha, they would have to pass through the fire of God. The enemy may construct their own fire, but God's fire will consume the fire of the enemy. However because Elisha's servant could not see into the spiritual, he was afraid and the spirit of discouragement set in. In the same way, the reason you are discouraged is because you are not able to see God's plan concerning the situation you are going through. What you can see is troubles and difficulties, trials and challenges. If God were to open your spiritual eyes and let you see His plans, then you would not be discouraged.Elisha understood the God he served and all he did was pray a single prayer for the enemy to be defeated. 2 Kings 6:18 states, 'As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, 'Strike this army with blindness.' So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.'When Elisha's servant saw the soldiers approaching, he may have considered finding a way to escape. However, because they were surrounded, any attempt to escape would have led him straight into the hands of the enemy. In the same way, the moment you allow the spirit of discouragement to enter into your life, you will fall into the hands of the enemy, and the expectations of the enemy concerning your life will be met. Once you get discouraged, the enemy has won the battle. This is why you should not let the spirit of discouragement take over your life. It is not over until it is over; as a child of the Most High God, you are not supposed to give up in battle.Exodus 6:6-9 states, 'Therefore, say to the Israelites: 'I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.'Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labour.' From this, we learn that the spirit of discouragement will make you deaf to what the Lord is saying.Pastor Seyi Ogunorunyinka is the General Overseer, The Promised Land Ministries, Solution Ground, Surulere, Lagos. pastorseyiogunorunyinka@gmail.com
