Supreme Court ruling: LP demands fresh election timetable

Published by Tribune on Mon, 30 Jan 2012

The Labour Party (LP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to announce new dates for election in the five states affected by the Supreme Court ruling of last Friday. The National Chairman of LP, Chief Dan Iwuanyanwu, who stated this on Sunday said if INEC refused to do so, the party would have no option but to go to court to compel it to release fresh election dates. The Supreme Court had last Friday, removed the governors of five states, following its rejection of the tenure elongation bid of the governors. The affected states include Bayelsa, Kogi, Cross River, Adamawa and Sokoto .Chief Iwuanyanwu said INEC should issue fresh guidelines on the timetable in line with the Supreme Court judgment.According to him, his party would head for the court this week if INEC fails to comply with the judgment. He said:'What INEC has done so far, though illegal, was predicated on the fact that the tenure of those governors was still running. It must be admitted that this illegal act committed by INEC was not deliberate, but was done on the presumption that the extended tenure of the governors was still subsisting.'"The current timetable is no longer realistic since it was predicted on illegality. Now that the Supreme Court has affirmed that the tenure of the five governors ought to have ended in May 29, 2011, INEC will now have to correct what it did wrongly.
