Residents of Olorunsogo, Odinjo, others want burnt PHCN office repair

Published by Tribune on Mon, 30 Jan 2012

FOR people living around Olorunsogo, Mus-lim, Odinjo, Jagun-Alade, Oremeji and other neighbouring communities, all in Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, darkness is no longer strange to them as they have been in perpetual darkness for over three years.Residents of the areas, especially the youths, also accused the management of the Power Holding Company Nigeria (PHCN) in charge of the zone, of not responding to several appeals made by them in which they urged the PHCN in the zone to restore electricity to the area after several months. They, however, explained that their hope of enjoying electricity this year was recently dashed when the PHCN office at Olorunsogo, very close to Jagun-Alade community, was burnt by some rampaging youths during the last anti-fuel subsidy removal protest.According to Mr Dayo Longe, a resident of Jagun ' Alade community in Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, 'many communities have been suffering in the hands of PHCN management in charge of Olorunsogo communities in the last three years. We hardly see rays of electricity or enjoy electricity supply for two hours in a day and many areas have been in perpetual darkness for more than 24 months.'Not only that, we had written many letters to the authorities of PHCN in charge of the area on many occasions, but it has been promises upon promises. There has been no rays of light in communities like Odinjo, Muslim, Jagun ' Alade, Oremeji, as well as the entire Olorunsogo environs for many months. But now, it is like salt has been added to our injuries as the transformers serving the communities was burnt during the last protest. What is our fate now, especially that PHCN has been taken over by private investors,' he lamented. For Mrs Juliana Irhedia, a resident of Oremeji, Ibadan, she lamented that light has not been regular in the area for over two years even before the PHCN office at Olorunsogo area was burnt. However, Mr Raheem Adeleke, a resident of Odinjo, whose area is also affected, called on the state government to help them address the problem.Mr Supo Akinwande of Muslim Area, also begged Oyo State government to step into the matter so that electricity supply could be restored to the affected communities. His words, 'it is very painful that the PHCN office at Olorunsogo, was razed down.We learnt that the repair work on the damaged transformers and other electrical installations responsible for electricity supply to various communities had reached an advanced stage before the miscreants burnt everything.
