Olympics qualification has erased sad memory of Maputo Games, says Adam

Published by Guardian on Mon, 30 Jan 2012

FOR Issa Muhammad Adam, his second appearance in the Olympic Games with the London show this year could wipe the memory of not winning gold at the Maputo 2011 All Africa Games in Mozambique.Adam, who resumed light training after coping an arm string injury during the Olympics qualifiers in Egypt, told The Guardian yesterday that it was much more difficult for him in Maputo than in Egypt. He said: 'I know that when I picked a bronze medal in Maputo so many people thought I did not do well, but I know that I tried my best to make my country proud.'However, the Olympics qualifier in Egypt was a bit easier for me because I was mentally and physically prepared for the championship. All the same, my berthing at the London Olympics has erased the memory of Maputo and my focus now is to ensure I correct the mistake I made at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when I lost to Peru's Peter Lopez in the quarter-final.'The Kano State-born athlete, meanwhile, disclosed that the London Olympics would be his last outing at the multi-sports championship, stating: 'I think this will be my last Olympics because I believe I need to give other upcoming athletes chance to be at the Olympics.'But for now, I cannot disclose the next line of action after the Olympics because my focus now is to do well for myself and Nigeria in London.'Adam expressed confidence in the ability of the new Korean tactician that guided the team to success at the Egypt qualifiers, adding: 'I think the knowledge and experience of the Korean coach will be helpful to us, having come from the home of taekwondo.'The Beijing Olympics quarter-finalist said he was able to resume training two days ago but was advised by the physiotherapist to only commence light training for now. Adam, alongside his compatriot, Chika Chukwumerije, represented Nigeria at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and will return to London this year, having secured their places at the Africa qualifiers in Cairo earlier this month.
