House of Reps rerun: Oyo PDP chieftain urges INEC to declare PDP winner

Published by Tribune on Tue, 31 Jan 2012

The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo North senatorial district, Alhaji Yakubu Oladoja, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the PDP candidate, Honourable Afees Jimoh Adelowo, as the winner of the Saturday's rerun election into the House of Representatives held in Irepo/Olorunsogo/Oorelope Federal Constituency, having won the majority of the votes cast. The PDP had polled 16,394 as against the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) which polled 14,523, but the INEC said the result of seven units cancelled across the three local governments made the election inconclusive. However, Alhaji Oladoja maintained that since the PDP won the votes in the results of 210 other units, it should be declared winner for the sake of peace and fairness.Meanwhile, the PDP candidate in the Saturday, January 28 rerun election, Honourable Adelowo, has commended the people of the constituency for the courage and resolve demonstrated in voting for him despite the high-scale thuggery and attempts to rig the election by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state.Honourable Adelowo urged the electorate to remain calm and dedicated to their mandate, even as he commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security operatives for the efforts made in making sure that people's votes counted.
