Communities appeal to Ogun govt over attacks by Fulani herdsmen

Published by Tribune on Tue, 31 Jan 2012

The people of Ibeku, Agbon,Kodera and Asa communities in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State have appealed to the state government to improve security system in the areas, following incessant attacks launched on the communities by Fulani herdsmen.Making the plea was Oba Olaleye Adigun, who led a delegation to the Chairman, Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM),Mr Olubukola Onabanjo, over the inability of schools in the area to resume for the second term academic activities for fear of being attacked by the herdsmen. The traditional ruler said that following the wanton destruction of lives and property in the areas, pupils, students and their teachers could not resume for normal activities after the New Year break due to spate of violence being recorded in the affected areas. He explained that the Fulani cattle herdsmen fed their herds on the crops of their farmlands which according to him, had caused a lot of damage on their farm products to the provocation of the farmers. While responding TESCOM chairman assured the people of the areas of improved security by the Ogun State Government to ensure peaceful co-existence among the ethnic groups residing in the areas.Onabanjo sympathised with the victims, urging them never to take the laws into their hands, assuring that the government had taken proactive measures that would guarantee normalcy in the affected areas on time, maintaining that all schools closed in the area as a result of the crisis would soon be re-opened with adequate security measures put in place.
