Jonathan, Mark, others condole with IG over wife's death

THERE were torrents of condolence messages yesterday to the newly appointed Acting Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar, over the death of his wife, Hajiya Maryam.She died of cancer and was buried yesterday at the Taurani Cemetery.President Goodluck Jonathan in his condolence message, described Maryam's death as 'sad, painful and untimely' especially at this time that her husband needed her moral and emotional support as he confronts the challenge of ensuring national security in his new post.In a statement by the President's Special Adviser (Media & Publicity) Dr. Reuben Abati, Jonathan lauded Maryam's great concern for the welfare of the less privileged in the society particularly orphans.He also noted her several charity works even before she assumed her last position as President of the Police Officers' Wives Association (POWA).He added that the President on behalf of the Federal Government prayed the Almighty Allah to grant the soul of Maryam eternal rest and grant her husband and family the strength to bear the irreplaceable loss.In the same vein, the Senate President, David Mark, in his message of condolence said he was saddened that Maryam died at a time when her supportive hands were needed by her husband to pilot the affairs of the Nigerian Police Force.According to Mark, 'I earnestly share in your pains and wish that Almighty Allah in His infinite mercies grant you and the entire family the fortitude to bear this great loss.He urged the bereaved family, the government and people of Zamfara State to take solace in the fact that late Maryam left a legacy of a virtuous wife and mother who touched the lives of people positively.Also, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo, described the death of the IG's wife as shocking, disheartening and highly unfortunate.Ajimobi expressed regret that Maryam's death was coming at a time when her husband needed her moral and spiritual support in his onerous task at tackling the security challenges confronting the country, particularly the Boko Haram menace.Meanwhile, former Lagos State Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the sudden death of the acting IG's wife as 'a rude shock and a very sad development' and prayed that Allah will grant her soul repose.While expressing his profound sympathy and that of his family to the Abubakar's family, Tinubu urged the acting IG to take heart, stay focused and consider this development as an inspiration that will spur him onto greater heights in the service of Nigeria and of humanity at large.
