Kanu faces hard times

Published by Tribune on Wed, 01 Feb 2012

NIGERIAN star, Nwankwo Kanu will not be paid his salaries and allowances for the time being as his club's bank account has been frozen. This is part of a winding-up order given the club by the British authorities over Kanu's club, Portsmouth's failure to pay a 1.6 million ($2.5 million) tax bill, the club has said. The move has left the club from England's south coast, which won the FA Cup four years ago, unable to pay players and staff salaries.Portsmouth was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2009/10 season when it again reached the FA Cup final after having its points deducted for entering into administration. At the time the club had debts of 130 million and was on the verge of liquidation when Hong Kong-based businessman Balram Chainrai took over in October.Despite starting last season with a threadbare squad, Portsmouth did, under the guidance of manager Steve Cotterill, manage to stay in the second-tier Championship, rather than drop further into the third division. But earlier this term Cotterill left to join divisional rival Nottingham Forest and was replaced by Michael Appleton.Despite its off-field problems, Portsmouth won 3-0 away to Peterborough on Saturday, a result that left it 10 points above the relegation zone. Were the club to enter into administration again, they would likely be hit with another points deduction a huge blow to their hopes of remaining in the Championship.
