Idi-Osan road has become a death trap

Published by Tribune on Wed, 01 Feb 2012

MANY motorists, especially commercial vehicle operators, are now avoiding Idi-Osan road and those who are compelled to ply the road are charging high fare.As if they had a joint meeting to avoid the road, commercial vehicle operators plying communities like Foworogi, Ogbere and others, all in Ona-Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State, insisted that they would continue to avoid Idi-Osan road and other areas in the zone if the state government did not repair the road.According to a commercial driver, Seun Oluwansanmi, the road should be repaired for smooth drive, adding that the bad road was making vehicle owners to spend much on repairs and servicing. His words: 'If I will be spending huge amount of money to service my commercial bus because the road I ply is not good, then, I better avoid such a road. Idi-Osan road is very bad and has become a headache to many vehicle owners in the area,' he lamented.A private vehicle owner, Mr Simeon Ibekwe, who spoke with Community News, urged the government to repair the road without further delay, saying 'how many years will it take them to fix this bad road. It is an embarrassment that we have a local government which is close to the people, yet, they close their eyes to this type of anomaly. We are in 21st century and Ibadan is supposed to be a cosmopolitan city, but see the type of road we are passing,' he stated.Residents of Foworogi community also in Ona-Ara Local Government Area of the state, were not also happy with the road linking their area with Idi-Osan.They said it has been promises upon promises by the concerned authorities. Mr Sylvester Ikhime, a shop owner at Foworogi area, said 'we are begging the authorities of Ona-Ara Local Government to live up to their responsibilities. This road is under their jurisdiction and we expect that it should be motorable.'This is a busy road, but we are surprised that up till this time, we have not seen any sign that it would be repaired,' he said.
