With Mont Blanc, beads... you've got Mr Wonder's signature

Published by Guardian on Wed, 01 Feb 2012

To some people, he is Mr. Wonder and to many others, he's Fela's reincarnate. Popularly known as W4, Adewale Adepoju is from Ilesha-Ikoyi, Osun State. His musical journey began when he was in JSS 2; he, however, became a regular feature in the scene in 2004. Before going solo, he had featured as a lead vocalist in Jagbajantis High School, where he was the sideman to Sound Sultan, 'the School's head-teacher.' His debut album, Temperature, released in 2005, with songs such as Solo, High Club Party (Too kpokpos), Amen and Lover's Love, endeared him to many music lovers. Wa Gba Kontrol, his latest single released last year is enjoying massive airplay. The Too kpokpos crooner tells DANIEL ANAZIA what fashion means to him Your definition of fashionIt is all about trend setting and the expression of oneself. It is a combination of your thought and style. I love to make statement with my unique style, which I infuse into my music. Uniqueness of your styleThe late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Abami Eda, is my inspiration. The chuck pencil trouser or jean, fitted shirts and a complementing bead, which have become my trademark were inspired by the weird one.Favourite colourThey are pink, purple, lemon, green, white, black and orange. They give me solace. Favourite designer(s) I love Mont Blanc precision and attention to details. Favourite piece of clothingMy chuck pencil trousers and jeans with fitted shirts. I call them 'wonder clothes'. I can't wear anything else. Most expensive fashion itemsThat's my Mont Blanc wristwatch; I got it for $25. Favourite signature scentI mix fragrance a lot, but give me Mont Blanc or Seductive ... ko gba Kontrol. What would you consider as fashion faux pax'Wearing oversized or too tight clothes. Bad colour combination is poor dress sense. What would you not be found wearing' I can wear anything but not female clothes' skirt, G-string.What is sexy in men and women'For me, being sexy is looking sleek and stylish; whether you are a man or woman.Favourite food Give me amala with Ewedu and served with shrimps. I love fried plantain (dodo), too. Like I like honest and open minded people.Dislikes Fake people, liars and back stabbers. How do you unwind'I hang out with friends in the basketball court. I sleep, watch movies and football.Craziest thing ever donePerforming an entirely different song from what I rehearsed. But it turned to be a blessing in disguise. Choice holiday destinationThe places I have not been to before.Philosophy of lifeLife for me is live and let's live; what is meant to be will be.How about your new project'My new project is titled Mr. Wonder. It will serve as leverage for transformation. It will move me from W4 to W4 Mr. Wonder. The album will be showing the unique part of me, replicating some cultures from Fela. Mr. Wonder is a different thing entirely; it is a combination of vocal, lyrics, rhymes, new messages and good music. I recently dropped three new singles of the album -- Wa Gba Kontrol, Do Something and Sexy Swagger; they are all great tracks. How do handle your female fans' Hmmmm ' I'm grateful to God and my fans. They made me what I'm today. I love and respect them; they are my lovers'dem too much. One thing you would like to change in Nigeria if given an opportunityThe power challenge is killing. An end to irregular power supply will bring good fortunes for us a nation.
