Boko Haram: UNIMAID Students plan to rewrite JAMB

Published by Nigerian Compass on Wed, 01 Feb 2012

Following the April 2011, general election, students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) have not been having their academic calendar devoid of various challenges. The challenges began immediately after the general election due to the post election violence, bombings, attack by gunmen, temporary shutdown of the university, ASUU strike and others have threatened the smooth academic calendar of the University. Its also surprising to note that the university had just one full semester since her resumption in May last year. Hence, some students are now set to re-write this year JAMB exam in order to flee the town and take proper responsibility for their career.According to Idris Suleiman, an anatomy student of the University, he said 'I am preparing to write another JAMB exam this year so that I won't have to leave my career at the mercy of circumstances. Although I've not made up my mind to leave the institution but I want to plan ahead in case of any hiccup. It was a voluntary decision I have to take this step especially when I saw noticed that the University had only one full semester last year'.Another student of the university who hailed from the South West, pleaded anonymity to express his fear saying 'I'm not sure I would resume back to school after this ASUU strike. I've had enough of incessant bombings and killings in Maiduguri. Even if I would not leave for any reason, the recent multiple bomb blasts in Kano justifies my intentions to leave the school.', Another factor which trigger student to re-consider the continuity of the career in the university is the slow academic calendar. Some of the students also saide they intend to leave the university becausese their parents did not approve their stay again in the institution. Hence the 100 level students who had just one semester last year are seeking to change their institutions.Despite the intentions of some students to leave the campus for another institution, some were still optimistic and undeterred in their resolutions to pursue their career in the school. In her own opinion, Faith Chinyere, a 300 level student said she is not worried about the security challenges in Maiduguri as she hopes that things will soon return to normalcy. Elizabeth Oke expressed her view saying 'I believe God took me to Maiduguri for a purpose. So I believe my life is secured in the hands of God. He alone has the power to kill and make alive. And I am very sure He won't allow any evil to befall me'.
