INEC timetable: Jonathan, PDP govs meet in Abuja

Published by Tribune on Thu, 02 Feb 2012

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan and state governors elected on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met in State House, on Wednesday, following the cancellation of the meetings of the party's Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) scheduled for Wednesday and today respectively. It would be the first time the new Kogi State governor, Captain Idris Wada, would be meeting with the president and other PDP state governors, after the resolution of his swearing-in controversy arising from the recent Supreme Court judgment which terminated the tenure of five state governors. Also in the meeting were Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Ayim Pius Ayim; acting national chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje and the acting national secretary, Shehu Babayo.Other governors at the meeting were Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); Theodore Orji (Abia); Danbaba Suntai (Taraba); Isa Yuguda (Bauchi); Gabriel Suswam (Benue); Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom); Jonah Jang (Plateau); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Ibrahim Shema (Katsina); Patrick Yakowa (Kaduna); Sullivan Chime (Enugu) and Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara).Sokoto, Cross River, Adamawa and Bayelsa states were represented by their acting governors. The agenda of meeting which started at about 5.30 p.m at the First Lady's wing of the Presidential Villa, was not made public, but was expected to review the implication of the Supreme Court judgment on the future programmes of the PDP, including its now postponed congresses and national convention where its new national officers would have been elected. The party, on Wednesday, announced the postponement of ward, local government, states and zonal congresses, as well as the national convention earlier scheduled to hold this month, saying that the postponement became necesary because of the timetable for gubernatorial elections to hold in four states at various days this month, which was released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).When the meeting ended at about 7.15 p.m, the governors declined to speak with State House correspondents. However, the new Kogi State governor spoke on the swearing-in crisis in his state, saying that he was now fully in charge of affairs and he would reconcile the different forces in the state as he intended to run an all-inclusive government.
