Gbaramatu youths warn oil firm against fueling communal crisis

Published by Tribune on Thu, 02 Feb 2012

GBARAMATU youths in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State have warned Chevron Nigeria Limited to stay away from the feud between youths of the Kingdom and their representatives in the Egbema Gbaramatu Cmmunities Development Foundation (EGCDF).In a letter addressed to the management of Chevron in Lagos and ESCRAVOS, signed by the youths' president, Comrade Ubebe Felix and the Secretary, Comrade Governor Godbless, and copied to Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduanghan and security agents, they alleged that management of Chevron was creating division in the communities by backing the elders in the executives of E GCDF in the on going crisis in the community. The youths accused their representatives in the Foundation of conniving with Chevron in putting together a Memorandum of Understanding which the youths said would impoverish the people of the communities if allowed to be implemented. The letter said ' It is crystal clear that Chevron Nig Ltd is promoting injustice and corrupt practices in the kingdoms where they operate, particularly Gbaramatu kingdom. Thus, we the youth leaders have warned and called on the management of Chevron Nig Ltd to rescind its decision and mind its businesses of production in Gbaramatu kingdom in the interest of peace.'Conventionally, it is expected of her as the operator of NNPC/Chevron joint venture, to stick to the agreements reached in the constitution and GMoU and ensure that the policies are followed and strictly adhered to. Yet, Chevron Nig Ltd is pushing very hard that the purpose for signing a constitution and GMoU in respect of the Ijaw Regional Development Council (RDC) is completely defeated,' it stated. The letter therefore appealed to the governor to prevail on the management of oil firm to stop fueling community crises in the interest of peace in the communities.
