Man jailed for stealing pot of soup

An Ilorin Magistrates' Court has sentenced a 58-year-old man, Dare Foyanmu, to four months imprisonment for stealing food.The man was found guilty of sneaking into a canteen at Challenge area, Ilorin, where he stole food and some other items.Before Foyanmu's conviction, the prosecutor, Sergeant Al-Hassan Jubril, had urged the court to try him summarily, since he pleaded guilty to the allegations.The Judge, Magistrate I.A. Dasuki, granted the oral application of the prosecutor, as he convicted Foyanmu for the offence of theft, contrary to Section 287 of Penal Code Law.As a result, the court sentenced him to four months imprisonment with an option of N4,000 as fine. The convict is to spend the jail term at the Federal Prison, Oke Kura, Ilorin.It was gathered that trouble began for the convict following a complaint on January 18, 2012 at 'A' Division Police Station, Ilorin, by one Gowin Maduakor of Challenge area, Ilorin that when he got to his wife's canteen at Challenge, Ilorin on January 15, 2012, he discovered that some food items had been stolen by unknown persons.Items such as garri, tomatoes, onions, a bag of rice, two fowls, two coolers, handset, melons and wears were carted away.The complainant also said that when he got to the shop on January 16 and 17 respectively, he discovered that some other items were missing.Luck, however, ran out of the convict when the complainant along with his son and a neighbour decided to stay behind in the shop the following day, and he suddenly saw the convict sneaking into the canteen kitchen and took a pot of stew.When the convict saw the owner of the shop, he took to his heels. He was pursued and got arrested, while some of the stolen clothes were recovered from his bag.
