Old students to raise N50m for Akoko Gram school

Published by Tribune on Thu, 02 Feb 2012

The old students of Akoko Grammar School in Arigidi-Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, have expressed their readiness to help in the infrastructural development of the school by raising N50 million towards the development of the 50-year old school. The people also noted that the argument over the return of missionary schools to the original owners should not be prolonged, saying what was needed was the cooperation of communities and people with the government for the development of the education sector. The National President of the Old Students Association, Chief Jacob Adojutelegan, said the fund raising became necessary because the government alone could not provide the materials needed in the institution.According to Adojutelegan, who spoke at a press conference in Akure as parts of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the institution, the money would be used to purchase school bus, construct modern hostels and upgrade the existing infrastructure in the school. He said old students of various institutions should come together and help their alma- mater, just as he asked the government to reintroduce boarding system to help the integration of the students.Adojutelegan said the issue of return of schools to their original owners should not be of concern but the development of schools' facilities.According to him, the school that has produced the incumbent Commissioners for Economic Planning and Economic Development, Mr Akin Adaramola and Alhaji Yekini Olanipekun among other present and former political office holders, should not find it difficult to raise the fund.Adojutelegan added that some of the events to mark the anniversary included inter-house athletics competition, novelty match, commissioning of projects and award of excellence to the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and his counterpart in Osun state, Rauf Aregbesola and ten others.
