Customs men assault teacher for punishing colleague's son

THERE was pandemonium in a public secondary school in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Monday when men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in the state swooped on a teacher for allegedly punishing a son of one of their colleagues.The officers, said to be about 10 had stormed the United Secondary School, Ijokodo area of Ibadan in about four vehicles to protest the punishment meted on the student by one of the teachers identified as Mr. Ogunleye.The said student, Allyson Ebuka, who is in his Senior Secondary School (SSS) three and his mates, were said to have been asked to kneel down as punishment for their unruly behaviour.But while his mates were said to have obeyed, Ebuka allegeldy refused to do so, which infuriated his teacher who gave him some strokes of cane.He was said to have immediately rushed to the Customs Barracks, which was a stone throw to the school to report the incident to his parents, who rushed down to the school.The affected parents, according to eyewitness directed their son to beat the teacher in return.Ogunleye, while narrating the incident to reporters said, 'I was standing in front of the staff room when Ebuka and his parents arrived. The man instructed the boy to beat me. He immediately went for a wheel spanner inside his father's car and was aiming at my head. But I used my hand to protect my head. His father then asked for reinforcement. About 10 officers in uniform later arrived and started shooting. They dragged me to a corner and started beating me until I fell down; they tore my shirt in the process. When other teachers and students came to rescue me, they started shooting again and people began to run away.'Ogunleye said his colleagues later rescued him and took him to the hospital for treatment.Meanwhile, the state Ministry of Education has ordered the immediate suspension of Ebuka to serve as deterrent to others, while the state House of Assembly has also summoned the teacher and the school principal to appear before it to give account of the incident.Effort to get the reaction of Customs Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mrs. Nkiru Nwala was not successful as she was said to be out of town when The Guardian called.
