NJC suspends Salami's reinstatement agenda

Published by Tribune on Fri, 03 Feb 2012

INSIDER accounts of the Thursday's meeting of the National Judicial Council (NJC) revealed that the recommendation to restore the suspended president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Isa Salami, is to be suspended for now, pending the resolution of litigations arising from his suspension. The two-day meeting scheduled to consider the Judicial Reform Panel's recommendation ended on Thursday with no official statement from the council on the matter. The brick-wall on the matter was said to be largely due to a suit brought against the council by a human rights campaigner, Mr Noah Ajare.A source privy to the meeting on Thursday noted that the situation remained unchanged, with the pro- and anti-rule of law on the pendency of the suit.It was said that the majority of the members had argued that it would be unpardonable for the council to make the same mistake twice, considering the accusation that it acted sub judice when it suspended Salami. It could not be confirmed if Salami had been contacted on the need for him to withdraw his suit against the council, which is the major impediment against his restoration to office. When the Nigerian Tribune sought the opinion of a council member, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, on whe-ther or not court actions could restrain the council from performing its statutory functions, he said he had no comment.Council spokesperson, Mr Soji Oye and the media adviser to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Mohammed Adamu, were not available for comments.
