Ready For A Job Interview

Published by Guardian on Sat, 04 Feb 2012

Dress for success. Avoid these fashion blunders when going for a job interviewIT'S a New Year again and many job seekers would like to begin their job search while others who are working would like to seek greener pastures. In these days of graduate warehousing, only few jobs are available for the vast majority of job seekers, so apart from your well packaged CV, experience and personality, dressing to impress should also be part of your arsenal to clinch that much-coveted job.If you want to clinch that good job you've been craving for this year, then avoid these dressing faux pas when going for an interview.. Wild Nail Polish- Nail polish should be of a light shade or clear. For both women and men, extremely long or uncut nails are a real turnoff, too. Your nails should be groomed and neat.. Jangly Jewellery- Do not wear more than one ring per hand or one earring per ear. Do not wear face jewellery or ankle bracelets please.. Open-toed or backless shoes and mules are a definite no-no. Out-of-date shoes should also be thrown out or kept for other occasions. Shoes should be comfortable and polished. Shoes that are well cared-for signal 'good attention to detail.'. Outdated suits- These have lapels that are too wide (three inches or more) or too narrow (one inch or less). A good tailor can alter lapels. The style for men's jackets should be full-body and looser rather than fitted or tight ones. Check the ensemble for missing buttons; frayed cuffs and other needed repairs.Everything must be clean, neat and ironed, no bulging pockets or sagging coat lining.. Short skirts: Hemlines should preferably be knee-length or above the knee for both skirt and dress suits. Don't wear a mini-skirt, Capri- pants or leggings to an interview.. Flashy accessories: Briefcases, purses and shoes should all be conservative in colour and in good condition. Leather and patent handbags are the best.. Scent should be low-key or absent and use makeup sparingly.Conservative colours in various shades of blue and grey are the best. If you do wear black, make sure another colour is near your face to soften the look. Although it is conservative, too, brown is still considered questionable as a business colour, so you may want to avoid it except if the dress code of the business environment allows it. Change your appearance for a second interview by wearing a blouse, shirt, scarf or tie of a different colour. An interview is not the place to make a fashion statement, though those in the creative/design field and the very famous can be more adventurous. Everyone else should opt for a conservative look.
