Metamorphosis Of Aviation Industry, By Ogunleye

Published by Guardian on Sat, 04 Feb 2012

Nigeria Civil Aviation: Decade of Security, Safety And Passenger Comfort Development; Olufemi AdewunmiOgunleye; Crescent University Press; Abeokuta; 2011IN Nigeria Civil Aviation: Decade of Security, Safety And Passenger Comfort Development, Chief Femi Ogunleye chronicles the metamorphosis of aviation industry from the perspective of his personal experience of 30 years as a major stakeholder, his dream and strategy of developing the industry for the good of Nigerians.Ogunleye is a veteran journalist and a public relations expert. After an illustrious career as a senior correspondent in the Daily Times of old, he was head of Public Relations at the defunct Nigeria Airways for close to 30 years before retirement.A consummate newspaper columnist on aviation in Nigeria and publisher of Aviation Journals, he had written several articles on aviation development in Africa. His first book on the liquidated Nigeria Airways ' WT040 'published in 2000 is regarded as a compendium on Aviation in Africa.Indeed, the author enriches the book with his deep knowledge of the industry having been an experienced aviation correspondent and valued corporate affairs specialist in the liquidated Nigeria Airways, which he served for about a quarter of a century and ever since, a Public Relations consultant in the industry.Essentially the book details the activities and achievements of the NCAA under the tenure of Dr. Harold Olusegun Demuren, but also provides insight into the existence and successful efforts of other service providers to give the public quality service delivery, which makes the work sufficiently comprehensive and of value to avid readers. With a total of 18 chapters running through 174 pages, the curtain raiser, in form of a prologue, is a tribute to the author's brother in-law, an erudite lawyer, Akinboyejo Akinola who died in a Bellview plane crash in October 2005 in Lisa, Ogun State.Thereafter, the book in its introduction puts into perspective how the sector has evolved with deplorable condition of air transport facilities in Nigeria before and after the government had thrown the baby and the bathwater away as exemplified in the liquidation of Nigeria Airways, coupled with the deteriorated safety standards and airline operational deficiencies which combined to earn Nigeria a pariah state status and which is worrisome to aviation enthusiasts.Other chapters in the book include: Safe and Secure Aviation Industry-Nigeria's vision, Milestone; Flashpoint, Airport Development, MM2-The BOT Magic,The New Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. Others are Public Relations in NCAA, Some of the published articles on NCAA in selected media, Airlines in Nigeria, Consumer protection and passenger comfort, Travel agency in Nigeria, The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Nigeria Meteorological Services, Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Accident Investigation Bureau and concluding words of acknowledgement. What gives the book an attraction is the collection of pictures; some of them evoke nostalgia. The pictures are those of liquidated Nigeria Airways, the historic Aero Contractors' Africa's all female crew flight achieved by Captain Bolaji Agbelusi and her crew of three beautiful women.Commenting on the new culture of safety in the aviation industry, the author says, 'The constructive restructure of the aviation industry including eliminations and substitutions of operatives in the relevant agencies as well as legislative empowerment for safety oversight in particular, no doubt, have aided Nigeria's removal from the pariah state classification and admitted into ICAO's list of nations that are now SARPs compliant'.
