Group Faults Planned Relocation Of Imo Varsity To Okorocha's Hometown

A GROUP under the aegis,Group 5-7 DV has urged Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, to drop the ambition of relocating Imo State University, Owerri (IMSU) to his hometown in Ogboko, Ideato South Local Council of Orlu senatorial zone of the state.Briefing journalists on Thursday evening, Prof. George Amadi who said he has been teaching Law for over 29 years at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, disclosed that the body wrote Okorocha on January 24 on the matter.The letter reads :'Your Commissioner for Information, Dr. Obinna Duruji gave reasons why you thought it wise to relocate the Imo State University to your local government area.'We must confess, your Excellency, that the reason is not fair and just. We believe that it will not add economic, political and moral value to Imo State.'We therefore most humbly advise that the reasons adduced by your Commissioner for Information are as untenable as they are unconvincing.'Continuing, the group which includes Okechukwu Unegbu, former president of the Chartered Institute of Bankers; Chris Ahumigbe, Dr. Okechukwu Ewurum and Okechukwu Ekeocha submitted: 'We believe that the idea to relocate Imo State University, which operates a multi-campus system in the three senatorial zones in the state, is not equitable, fair and just.'We therefore most humbly advise that your Excellency abandon the plan to relocate the Imo State University to your local government area.'We give this advise in absolute good faith, praying that God will give you the wisdom to render good governance to Imo State.'Duruji had a few days ago while briefing journalists in Owerri said the move by the governor was okay, stressing that other governors in some states did same and that Ideato was serene and conducive to learning and academic research activities.Okorocha also said it when he addressed his kinsmen and journalists in Ideato during a reception a few weeks ago.Many groups have been kicking against it. They include Owerri Peoples Assembly chaired by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. They opined that the site chosen by both late Chief Sam Mbakwe and Ikedi Ohakim in Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpalla axis be used instead.
