Delta sets up housing team, seeks professional synergy

COMPELLED by the resolve to ensure the speedy realisation of government's target in the housing sector, Delta State Government has established a three-man team to effectively monitor the activities of housing professionals in the various departments.The State's Commissioner for Housing, Chief Paulinus Akpeki made the remark while addressing the permanent secretary, Departmental heads and some senior officers of the ministry at a meeting designed to fashion out strategies for the implementation of the 2012 budget for the housing sector.In statement made available to The Guardian, he said that adequate arrangements have been put in place to rejuvenate and re-invigorate the critical operational units and structures of the Ministry of Housing, adding that the contributions of architects, quantity surveyors, engineers and builders were vital to service delivery in the sector.The commissioner cautioned against unhealthy rivalry and avoidable clashes of the interest among the different professionals staff of the ministry, especially architects and quantity surveyors, saying that henceforth there should be a well coordinated synergy among the various units and departments.The commissioner told the senior staff of his ministry that under the new dispensation, the execution of capital projects was a major yardstick for assessing performance, adding that the state government had introduced different measures to monitor and determine the actual performance of each ministry.The commissioner explained that giving the circumstance, it had become imperative for official duties to be performed differently from the old order so as to achieve optimal output in line with available resources and manpower.He underscored the urgent need to re-examine the existing key structures of the ministry to allow for real and effective monitoring and execution of Bill of Quantities (BOQ's) and Housing projects being handled by the state government.
