MEND resurrects, attacks Agip facilities

ONE year after declaring a ceasefire, members of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) struck at the weekend, attacking an Agip truckline in Bayelsa State.The attack on Saturday, according to MEND spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, was to let the Federal Government know that the organisation is still in existence, despite the Federal Government Amnesty Programme which had taken most of the armed youths from the creeks of the Niger Delta in exchange for training and re-integration. The government had in 2008 offered amnesty to the local agitators who took up arms against the country over their bid to have a larger share of the oil resources derivable from the Niger Delta.
