Stop meddling inINECs conduct of 2011 elections Buhari Campaign Organisation tells Jonathan, PDP

Published by Tribune on Wed, 06 Apr 2011

General  Muhammadu  Buhari Campaign Organisation hasurged President GoodluckJonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to desist from any further covert and overt interference in the way and manner in which this months general election is being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).The organisation in a release signed by its publicity secretary, Mr Yinka Odumakin, said that it was reported in the media that Vice-President Namadi Sambo; National Security Adviser to the President, General Patrick Azazi; Minister of Defence, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, and his Police Affairs counterpart, Mr Hunphrey Abba, along with the service chiefs, held a meeting with the INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, over the botched April 2 National Assemblyelection .The organisation noted that in any civilised clime, a candidate or party that was participating in an election should naturally distance itself from the electoral body to avoid any appearance of undue influence or conflict of interest. This is why most, if not all, electoral commissions throughout the world are supposed to be independent of the various arms of government. Regrettably, this is not the case in Nigeria as our so- called Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has a track record of being independent more in the breach than in observance, it stated. It also demanded for a probe of the role of INEC Director of Operations, Mr Nuru Yakubu, in the event that led to the bungling of last Saturdays National Assembly election, just as it called onProfessor Jega to clear the air on the rumour doing the rounds that twosets of result sheets with the same serial numbers were allegedly printed by the official printer of INEC.
