Analyzing Rhyno's Potential for a WWE Main Roster Return

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 05 Jun 2015

With all the talk of Kevin Owens, Samoa Joe and Sami Zayn dominating the NXT brand at the moment, it can be easy to forget that there's a former WWE Hardcore and ECW World Heavyweight Champion currently on the roster at Full Sail University.Rhyno's return to WWE was one of the more pleasant and unexpected surprises of the past 12 months, and he's certainly proven to be a useful acquisition for the brand since joining back in February. While the likes of Zayn and Owens have held up the brand at the top of the card, guys like Rhyno have done a great job in the middle of the card, with his feuds against the likes of Baron Corbin being good, solid additions to each and every show. But this past week on NXT, Rhyno managed to grab the headlines with an apparent turn on Finn Balor, spearing him on the stage after Balor had beaten him in the middle of the ring.It was great to see a bit more flavor and character from The Man Beast, but it begs the question, could Rhyno ever make it back onto the main roster in WWE'If talent and experience is anything to go by, then the answer has to be an undisputed yes. You only have to look at Rhyno's resume and see that if the WWE are short on brawlers and legitimate wrestlers for the middle of the card, Rhyno would be a great fit. It's been 10 years since he was last actively on the main roster, so it's safe to say he's been away for long enough to deserve another shot at it. At 39, age might not be on his side, but he's shown in NXT that he can still work matches pretty effectively. Anyway, 39 is only one year more than John Cena's age of 38, so that's somewhat of a moot point. The main problem that Rhyno faces when it comes to returning to the main roster and being a hit is that the landscape and programming regulations in WWE are a lot different to when he first made his debut with the company.Rhyno is a guy who thrived in hardcore backgrounds, illustrated by the fact he won the Hardcore Championship on three occasions. Extremity and pushing people to their very limits are how Rhyno best operates, and the WWE is in a different place to what it was in the early 2000s.PG-13 is the order of the day these days, and without that element of extremity to give Rhyno his niche, it's hard to see where he could fit in.And as well as that, with multiple stars from NXT making the leap to the main roster either recently or in the imminent future, Rhyno could be one of the standout stars on the brand if you fast forward a few months.Expect Kevin Owens to be gone before too long, and Samoa Joe will likely follow him. Sami Zayn, Hideo Itami and Finn Balor are all surely headed for the main roster over the next 12 months or so, too, so there needs to be some level of star power on NXT to give it some validity.Rhyno's best opportunity of being successful in WWE looks increasingly like it might be NXT. After all, he declared his interest in the NXT Championship when he first arrived on the brand, and with some big names moving up in the coming months, he might have a decent opportunity to do that post-Owens, Joe and Zayn. There's no doubting that Rhyno still has the ability and the talent to be a hit on the main roster, even after so long away from the spotlight in WWE.But in all eventuality, The Man Beast might be better off snubbing the bright lights of Raw and SmackDown and remaining in NXT. It would give him a great platform to work from as one of the stars of the brand, rather than potentially being lost in the shuffle of the chaos on the main roster.
