INEC will deliver credible polls -Guru Maharaj Ji

Published by Tribune on Thu, 07 Apr 2011

UNTIL now, Nigerians had believed in the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commissions (INEC) preparedness to organise a free and fair election, but when the Jega-led institution decided to postpone the April 2 election for the first time in the history of the country, the politys confidence in INEC waned. While many  are pointing accussing fingers at Jega and INEC, the leader of the Holy land in Nigeria, Sat Guru Maharaj Ji , said there are more to free and fair elections in Nigeria than the electoral body.Sat Guru Mahara  Ji, who opined that the responsibility of a free and fair election should be that of every citizen said:The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has  been able to present what it has on ground but from the information were getting, we believe that the body still needs to  work day and night to give us a better organised election than what weve been having in the past. Also, Professor Attahiru Jega has to address so many  pending cases in court. There are  many of them that he cant throw the under carpet if he wants to have a hitch- free election. On the DDC machines that were being stolen, those issues have nothing to do with INEC, it shows something is fundamentally wrong somewhere in our society. However, I believe that with the support of  the many Nigerians who are so much concerned about the peace of this country, the country and INEC will sail through.Baffled by the spate of violence already witnessed in the country as related to 2011 election, Sat Guru Maharaj Ji said,  such experience is not new in the world. He said pre-elcetion violence was a common development in world politics especially whenever power was to change hands.Nigeria, like many other countries, is not immune to pre-election crises, but when it gets to a point where life is involved, then, something drastic must be done about it. Look at the case of Akwa-Ibom State where property worth over N1.5 billion was destroyed, the money could naturally be the budget of countries like Gambia and  Senegal. One will begin to ask what are our police, army and para-military doing in this case. Once you take the life of human beings, the person must be ready to tell the world his reason for it. We re indirectly tolerating political violence by not punishing anybody for it. To desecrate the holy land, no matter how big you are, it is an offence. The Boko Haram, NURTW, killing of people in churches and mosques; all these issues have been politicised, this should not be so. Nobody should be above the law.We are abusing the democracy in Nigeria by attacking political office holders. This means that the country is not safe if people like General Onoja and the Senate President, David Mark were attacked. Since the calibre of these people can be attacked, then the masses are not safe anymore. The popular spiritual leader said most Nigerian retired generals could claim innocence of arms build-up in the society. He said they are the ones who know how these sophisticated ammunition get into private hands while trying to protect their various interests, hence, security meeting on this particular issue should be called.
