Published by Tribune on Thu, 07 Apr 2011

Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Plateau State chapter said the flaw experienced on Saturday that led to the postponement of the National Assembly election could be likened to a failed coup hatched by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in conjunction with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),to rig the election in favour of the PDP.Addressing newsmen in Jos, state chairman of CNPP, Alhaji Mohammed Kanam, said the conference had lost confidence in the ability of the Plateau State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Habu Zarma, to conduct free and fair elections. Our first complaint is the late arrival and distribution of electoral materials. Party representatives were at the state headquarters of INEC from Thursday, March 31,to Friday, April 1, without election materials, when the materials eventually came, they were in bits Some had Senate result sheets without the ballot papers and House of Representatives materials while some had the House of Representatives materials without the Senate materials. On the allocation of electoral materials, there were cases of short changes in Jos East, 54, 492 registered to vote but only 40,000 materials were allocated, Kanam had 140, 565 but 100, 000 was allocated, Pankshin had 124, 926 but 100, 000 was allocated and Jos North has 589, 867 registered voters but were given 465, 000 materials. The state chapter of the CNPP which said it had made a formal complaint to the national chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, stating its observations and suggestions to effect changes in the system, added that it will not give the Resident Electoral Commissioner any chance to rig elections in favour of the PDP in the state.
