Ashipa residents laud Community News Say, it moves govt to our road

Published by Tribune on Thu, 07 Apr 2011

After two years of abandonment inspite of many efforts and failing promises, residents of Ashipa community at Ipaja Ayobo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State have heaved a sigh of relief over a major road that passes through the community from Ayobo area through Igando to other parts of the state. The road, according to the residents, was tagged  a death trap for users, having been neglected for the past two years in spite of several promises made by different politicians that had visited the community for political campaign. The road received attention recently shortly after Community News beamed its searchlight on the importance of the road to the residents and several havoc that the road had wreacked.Although, some of the residents that spoke with Community News explained that much was still needed to be done to ensure that the road measure up to a standard that befits the residents, he, however, stressed that with the recent development, the road could still be damaged by downpour.Mr Olatunde George, an engineer, who praised the state government for responding to the story published commended Community News for being a mouth piece of the residents of the community, saying that efforts by the community to register its grievances with the government had proved abortive.According to him, Community News has become a voice for the voiceless, adding that governments response came as a surprise. We are glad that government, in spite of the recent political activities and their busy schedule can still remember us. It came as surprise to us because the road had been abandoned for the past two years; we thought that government had closed our chapter, not until they brought their earth leveler.I believe it was a response to a story reported by the Community News, because we had made several efforts without any meaningful response. We will forever be grateful unto  Community News, he said.Meanwhile, a resident, who would not want his name in print, said the road by design, should serve as a major link between Ayobo, Ashipa, Ipaja, and Oluwaga communities and Igando area of Lagos State, which, according to him, on completion, would reduce the usual traffic congestion experienced at Mosalashi Area of Alimosho Local Government.According to him, the road had claimed two lives of unsuspecting residents of the community at different times shortly after downpour, but the death trap had been levelled and now motorable. Also speaking with Community News, Mrs Adebimpe Ajetumobi, a resident of Asipa community, commended the state government for the  gesture, adding that government should not relent in its efforts on the road just as he explained that the road still needed government attention.Though, sounded skeptical while speaking with Community News, Mrs Ajetumobi was of the opinion that the road should be tarred from Ayobo community to Igando, so as to be sure of the state government commitment to upgrading lives and not just  for political reasons.
