Mom Accused Of Killing Children, Putting Them In Freezer Wants To Plead Guilty

Published by Huffington Post on Fri, 19 Jun 2015

ED WHITE, Associated PressDETROIT (AP) ' A Detroit woman accused of killing two of her children and storing their bodies in a freezer at her home was on Friday declared mentally competent to stand trial, and she told a judge that she wants to plead guilty and would accept the death penalty if Michigan had one.Mitchelle Blair said she doesn't need more time to think about a defense."I'm already saying I did it. ... I'm not changing my mind. I'm not changing anything," Blair, 36, told a judge in 36th District Court. She is charged with first-degree murder, torture and child abuse. The bodies of a 13-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son were discovered in a home freezer during an eviction in March. The children died months apart in 2012 and 2013.Experts said Blair is competent to stand trial. She waived her right to a hearing to determine whether there's enough evidence to send the case to trial in Wayne County Circuit Court. If Michigan had the death penalty, "I would take that," Blair told Judge Kenneth King. "I don't care."King said the next hearing would be June 26 in Circuit Court."We want this to be done very carefully. ... These are very unusual circumstances that someone would plead on the nose to first-degree murder," King said.A conviction carries life in prison with no chance for parole. It's not the first time that Blair has admitted guilt. She has made outbursts during separate hearings about custody of two other children.Outside court, defense attorney Wyatt Harris said Blair wants to show her 8-year-old son that she's taking responsibility."My client wishes to plead guilty to first-degree murder. That's the end of the conversation," Harris said.___Follow Ed White at http://twitter.com/edwhiteap -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
