Electricity tariff: Civil society groups protest 88% increase

The Abuja civil society groups, on Thursday, protested against the recent increase in electricity tariff by 88 per cent, saying it is unacceptable and negates the essence of the government.Members of the group, who staged a peaceful protest on the premises of the headquarters of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Abuja, informed that the increase would inflict more poverty on Nigerians. The leader of the group, Honourable Dino Melaye, told newsmen that over $16billion was spent during President Olusegun Obasanjo administration on power projects, noting that, 'Nigerians are still experiencing power failure more than when the money was not been spent'Comparatively, he disclosed that the Republic of Sudan spent same amount to generate over 3,000 megawatts of electricity and, 'built an International Hospitality Centre and Agricultural Irrigation System among others.'According to him 'they have achieved their evils plans in the energy sector by the subsidy removal now it is time to go for power and only God knows what next. The essence of all these is to render Nigerians devastatingly conquered species'He, however, called on Nigerians to reject the new tariff saying that ' we owe it a patriotic duty to sensitize Nigerians on this evil plans and to demand absolute and steadfast rejection of electricity price increase.
