Royal family threatens to sue Oye LG boss, secretary over alleged contempt

Published by Tribune on Fri, 17 Feb 2012

The Esubiyi royal family of Ayede-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State has threatened to institute a contempt charge against the caretaker chairman and secretary of the local government, Mr Adewale Adekoya and Mr Foluso Ojo respectively, for allegedly flouting a court order. The family, in a letter written by its counsel on the community's chieftaincy matter, Mr Emmanuel Adetifa, and made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti, threatened that the action became necessary because the local government authorities allegedly flouted an injunction given by a court stopping further action on the selection process of the Attah of Ayede. The letter which was routed through the office of the Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs to the Governor, Chief George Akosile, to the office of the governor, and the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Dayo Akinlaja, called for the 'immediate reversal of the selection process that threw up Alhaji Adebayo Filani as the Attah-elect.'The Esubiyi family said if this was not done, it would institute an action against the council chairman, saying the action of Adekoya was 'contemptuous and flagrant disobedience to court order, which carries serious judicial sanction.'A High Court sitting in Ikole-Ekiti had on January 30, 2012, granted an interlocutory injunction stopping the Oye Local Government Council and the state government from continuing with the selection process pending the determination of the substantive suit on the chieftaincy matter. The family decried how the council had gone ahead to select Alhaji Filani from Ilero Compound in Owaye quarters of the community on February 3, 2012, barely four days after the court judgment as the Attah-elect, despite the subsisting court order. The family called for immediate reversal of the selection process, that threw up Alhaji Adebayo Filani as the Attah-elect, failure which it will institute an action against the council helmsmen.Five members of the ruling house, Princes Mathew Dada, Samuel Ayodele Adebayo, Olagunju Oso, Ore Fabunmi and Bayo Elebute, had gone to court to challenge what they claimed was 'illegal substitution' of some of the names of those selected as warrant chiefs to prosecute the Attah's selection process.
