PDP NEC to approve tenure elongation for NWC today 'As congresses may begin March 3

Published by Tribune on Mon, 20 Feb 2012

THE National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will, in Abuja, at its emergency meeting today, consider and approve tenure elongation for its National Working Committee (NWC).Nigerian Tribune learnt that the action became necessary, to enable the NWC to get approval to conduct wards, local governments, states and zonal congresses, as well as the national convention earlier postponed twice. The congresses and convention were shifted because of the nationwide protest agaist fuel subsidy removal and the fresh governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, Adamawa, Sokoto and Cross River states. The tenure of the present NWC was expected to expire by March 8, going by the constitution of the party. It was gathered that the NWC resolved to seek for tenure elongation to guide against any litigation by members of the party, which would void the outcome of the congresses and its national convention.A member of the PDP NEC, who did not want his name in print, confirmed the development to the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday night, saying it was in the interest of the party and not because of any hidden agenda. It was gathered that once approved, the congresses would begin from March 3 and end with the national convention on March 24.Meanwhile, more aspirants picked nomination forms to contest the position of the national chairman of the party, at its forthcoming national convention slated for March 24.Those who picked the form after payment of the sum of N1 million were Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Senator Abba Aji and Shettima Mustafa.
