Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool: Latest Transfer Details, Reaction and More

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 01 Jul 2015

Nathaniel Clynehascompleted his move to Liverpool, penning a long-term deal with the Anfield club. The news was confirmed on Wednesday via the Reds'official websiteand Twitter account:Clyne appeared in 35 Premier League games for the Saints, scoring two goals and averaging an impressive 7.04 match rating, per WhoScored.com. His 3.3 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and 2.2 clearances per game were all very solid marks. The defender expressed his happiness at completing the move to Anfield:The Daily Telegraphranked him the league's third-best defender of the season, behind onlyBranislav Ivanovic and John Terry of Chelsea, saying he is "a rock in defencenobody has attempted more tackles this seasonand a dynamo going forward, the 24-year-old has a strong case to become the first-choice right-back for his country for years to come."It's high praise indeed and a major reason why his loss is sodevastatingfor Southampton. In May, manager Ronald Koeman said he was "confident that (Clyne) will sign a new contract" with Southampton going into the final year of his deal, per Izzy Horsefield of the Daily Express, but the allure of a bigger club was clearly too attractive for the 24-year-old.The England international is an excellent addition for Liverpool, and he will likely be the club's starting right-back immediately. He should only continue to grow at the position and could be an all-league player in defense for many years to come.It would appear the Reds havemade one of the signings of the transfer window, even if some of the higher-profile deals of this summer will receive more attention.
