"When I first made a grid, I happened to be thinking of the innocence of trees," the painter Agnes Martin told an interviewer in 1989. She wasn't being oblique, or at least no more so than usual. Over the course of her remarkable five-decade career, Martin transmuted conventional sources of artistic inspiration into some of the century's most sublime and spare paintings, transfigurations that seemingly confounded her capacity for explanation. In fact her vagueness in speech perfectly encapsulated what she was doing with paint.
