Matteo Darmian to Manchester United: Latest Transfer Details, Reaction and More

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 11 Jul 2015

Manchester Unitedhave agreed on a deal to sign Italy right-back Matteo Darmian from Torino, with the 25-year-old penning a four-year deal, with the option to extend into a fifth, to play at Old Trafford. The Red Devilsannounced on Saturday that Darmian would be completing the move to Englandafter spending the last four years of his career in Turin. Darmian talked about the move in the announcement:It is a dream come true to be joining Manchester United. I have loved the time that I have spent at Torino and I would like to thank the club and the fans for everything they have done for me. I am sure they can understand when the opportunity to join the biggest club in world came along it was something I had to do. To work with Louis van Gaal, a manager that has achieved so much in football is such an exciting prospect.United manager Louis van Gaal was effusive in his praise for the Italian as well:Matteo is a right-sided full back with the versatility of also being able to play on the left. He is a strong defender and has the ability to go forward in the attacking positions which is a fantastic attribute to have and much needed in the fast rhythm of the Premier League. Matteo will be a great addition to the team. I am delighted to welcome Matteo to the club and look forward to working with him in the coming days.Sky Italia (via Sky Sports) reported earlier in the weekthat Torino had accepted an 18 million (12.7 million) offer from Manchester United, who appear eager to upgrade the full-back position.Van Gaal opted to use Antonio Valencia as his primary option on the right side of defence last season, with Rafael slipping out of the starting XI.Torino chairman Urbano Cairo was previously quoted by Rob Dawson of theManchester Evening Newsas saying Darmian's suitors had until Sunday, July 12, to make their move for the player:Everyone who arrives at Bormio will stay for the rest of the year.Extra time has begun and on Sunday there will be the final whistle, that is the deadline.Three concrete offers have arrived for Darmian, but out of respect for those who made the offers I won't reveal them.An extraordinary player like Matteo will want to try and win the Champions League and Torino can't win it.Unitedclearly took note of that warning and chose to seal a move for the Italianwho capped 13 times for the Azzurribefore the Serie A side could refuse a deal.Bleacher Report's Matteo Bonetti is among the Milan academy graduate's admirers, taking note of his defensive capability after playing in central defence during his earlier development:Darmian made 41 appearances for Torino across all competitions last season, scoring four goals and making four assists, per WhoScored.com, playing in both right and left wing-back positions. That versatility will undoubtedly have been one of the numerous attributes Manchester Unitedtook note of in their decision to invest in the Italy international ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.
