MTN Lagos International Polo tourney gallops off today

TODAY through to the next two weeks, the best polo players within and outside Nigeria will gather at the Lagos Polo Club, Ikoyi, for what the organisers believe would be the most competitive championship in Nigeria this year.The Lagos international tourney, with MTN Nigeria as the lead sponsor, according to organsiers, will feature players from South Africa, England, Argentina, as well as Ibadan, Kano and Kaduna, among other cities in the northern part of the country.Outlining events lined up for the tourney at a press briefing yesterday, the Lagos Polo Club captain, Mustapha Fashinro, said the tourney beginning today at the Polo Ground in Ikoyi was packaged with improvement over the last edition. He said: 'We will do our best to ensure that those who attend the event home with a new experience, renewed passion and greater enthusiasm.'Apart from the foreign players coming for the event, Fasinro disclosed that this year's event, for the first time in the history of the tourney, would feature female players in the low Cup category. He added: 'Lagos International Polo Tournament is an annual event that brings together all top flight polo players in the country and beyond.'The tournament will feature notable Nigerian players, including Usman Babangida, Tajudeen Dantata, Adamu Atta, Sanni Dangote and Obafemi Otudeko, as well as one of the best on the African continent, Tomas Ussher of South Africa.'The tourney, Fasinro said, would see competition in the Dansa Cup, which will feature 10 teams, Lagos Low Cup (12 teams), Lagos Open Cup (seven teams) and the Majekodunmi Cup, which will involve three teams.Also speaking at the event, President of Lagos Polo Club, Adedapo Akinrele, thanked MTN for taking up the title sponsorship of the world class event, adding: 'We do not only talk the talk, we also walk the talk. We profess to give value to life and that is what we are showing this afternoon. This has made MTN to be associated with us. As a king of all brands, MTN is supporting polo, which is the king of all sports.'To the MTN Senior Manager, Consumer Marketing, Cherry Eromosele, the firm is committed to enriching the lives of its subscribers. It therefore chooses to touch their lives through their passion as represented in the game of polo, adding that, 'polo is a top flight game,' and 'MTN, as a top flight company, is proud to be associated with the game.
