PRONACO tackles N/Assembly on people's conference

PRO National Conference Organisation (PRONACO), on Wednesday, in Lagos again warned the National Assembly not to incur the wrath of the Nigerian stakeholders for opposing the desire of the Nigerian people for a new people's constitution.PRONACO said in Lagos, on Wednesday, that the National Assembly was beginning to push the Nigerian people to the wall by opposing to the call by the people for a national conference. Speaking through its spokesperson, Mr Olawale Okunniyi, the movement said by the provision of section 8 and 9 of the1999 Constitution and as amended in 2011, the National Assembly had no powers to give the country its desired popular constitution, but could only make laws via legislative motions to amend or tinker with the subsisting 1999 Constitution. It will be recalled that the Senate, through its spokesperson, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, reiterated on Tuesday, in Abuja, that it was only the National Assembly that could give the Nigerian people a popular constitution and that those calling for a national conference were propagating anarchy.
