What Marqise Lee Injury Issues Mean for Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 17 Jul 2015

Few players gave off the "it" factor in the 2014 NFL draft like former USC Trojan Marqise Lee did. Constantly smiling, known for speed and turning an average play into a great one, the Jacksonville Jaguars looked like they got a steal when they selected him in the second round. But Lee came with a fair warning: injury prone. His time at Southern Cal saw him miss games and often play at less than 100 percent. Injury is, for the most part, uncontrollable and one of the hardest things for players in the college and professional game to deal with. However, Lee didn't come with a death sentence; he came with a warning, and the Jaguars understood that. The speedy receiver isn't the biggest player in the world at 6'0", 192 pounds, and it has to be expected that he would deal with some injury issues in his rookie season.Lee wasn't alone, either. Fellow receivers Allen Robinson and Cecil Shorts III also sustained injuries throughout the season, severely crippling the Jaguars in the passing game.Take a look back at Lee's, Robinson's and Allen Hurns' highlights from last season (Warning: Contains NSFW language):So while Lee isn't the only receiver with health issues, his injury concerns tend to get the most attention, especially now. As the season begins to come around the corner, it's hard to come to terms with the fact that Lee didn't participate in OTAs or minicamp. But don't confuse Lee's knee injury this past offseason with a lack of interest or proper rehab. Lee spoke to ESPN's Mike DiRocco about his absence in minicamp and in OTAs."If I had the choice to go I'd be going," Lee said. "I haven't been in OTAs all summer. We've got three practices and they want to keep me out for the three practices. No reason to try to come back and do anything. As long as I take the mental reps and stay on top of my plays I'll be OK."While this plan of action isn't necessarily what Jaguars fans want to hear, it's probably the best move. Sure, making an appearance at minicamp would've been nice, but it makes much more sense to have him properly healed before getting back on the practice field. And so, with training camp starting in less than two weeks and Gus Bradley affirming a month ago that he expects Lee at camp, according to FCN's Mike Kaye, it appears that we will finally see the return of Lee.While it will be fantastic to have Lee back, one can't help but wonder how long before the injury bug strikes again. He's fully recovered and ready to work, but is there a guarantee that he can maintain fitness'The hopeful answer is yes, but the realistic answer is: Who knows' Injury seems to strike at the worst possible times, but his near-full recovery promotes a hopeful situation.Lee being on the field will be vital to this season, at least in the passing game. Robinson can bring down balls like no one's business, and Hurns showed stints of dominance. But Lee appears to be the wide receiver with the most talent and potential to make big plays.Lee is a guy who is used to making big plays and embraced the spotlight at USC. However, his rookie stats, seen below, show that his first season wasn't up to the bar he set for the Trojans. While the numbers aren't up to Lee's standard, his ambition to stand out will likely help him use his first season as fuel. He's gotten by the understandably difficult rookie year, and now it is time to start showing Jacksonville and the NFL exactly what he's capable of.On the field, he'll have few excuses. Quarterback BlakeBortles has been improving and also has a year under his belt. He'll often look to Lee in key moments, and understandably so. The former USC track-and-field star's breakneck speed and footwork should get him open even against the toughest of corners.Off the field, it's a situation out of his hands. If he can stay healthy, the possibilities are endless, but if he continues his trend of nagging injuries, he's no good to the Jaguars on the sideline. It's a tough situation to call, and you can't help but hope for the best with Lee. No one wants to see him sidelined, but the Jaguars need a guy of his caliber, and his injuries deprive them of that. What do you think' Does Lee breakout this season' Or do injuries continue to weigh him down' Comment below and answer the poll. All stats were provided byESPN.comunless otherwise stated.EvanReieris a Featured Columnist for Bleacher Report covering the Jacksonville Jaguars.
