Chelsea Transfer News: Latest on Filipe Luis and Axel Witsel Rumours

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 19 Jul 2015

Atletico Madrid's bid to bring Filipe Luis back from Chelsea during the summer transfer window appears to be gaining steam, with club president Enrique Cerezo confirming there have been positive talks between both sides.Speaking to COPE (h/t Goal, for beIN Sports), he said:There are negotiations in place but I don't know how fruitful they will be. Filipe Luis is a magnificent player. We would be delighted if he comes back and I think that, in the end, we will find a solution. As always, the financial aspect takes precedence over the sentimental aspect but I believe a deal can be reached.Luis left Atletico for Chelsea during the summer of 2014, but he failed to establish himself as a regular starter during his first season at Stamford Bridge. The Daily Mirror's Darren Lewis claims the Blues are eyeing talented youngster Abdul Baba Rahman, and his arrival could signalthe end for Luis.Talent isn't the issueLuis is a top full-back who has earned his stripes at the domestic and international levels. But with Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta firmly entrenched as the starters at Stamford Bridge, there was no reason for manager Jose Mourinho to shake things up last year.Luis is still a hugely popular figure in the Spanish capital despite leaving the club last year, and former team-mate Koke would welcome a reunion, as he told Marca(h/t ESPN FC's Adriana Garcia):Filipe is not a traitor. Filipe decided to leave and now he has the possibility to return. If he does come, there will be more competition in the team and that is good. We will be a better side and we will fight to achieve more aims.As long as he plays and does well, there will be no problems. If Rahman moves to west London, a transfer becomes almost inevitable. Luis is 29, and at his age, he needs to play regular football to battle for a spot in Brazil's starting XI. He's too good to be a depth option or a rotational piece, as many believed he was among the world's best at his position just a year ago.The financial aspect of the deal won't be easy to square away, though. It makes little sense for Chelsea to sell Luis back to Atletico for anything less than what they bought him for one year ago, and given the Spaniards' significant debtsvia the Daily Mail's Pete JensonAtletico will be looking for an affordable deal. The two clubs have done plenty of business in the past few years, however, and if all parties are willing to play ball, there's little doubt Chelsea and Atletico can come to an agreement.Blues Preparing Offer for Axel Witsel'Eager to add depth to his impressive array of midfielders, Mourinho is reportedly considering making a 22.9 million offer for Zenit St. Petersburg's Axel Witsel, according to Fichajes.net (h/t Metro's Jamie Sanderson).Witsel has anchored Zenit's midfield for years and has been one of Belgium's most consistent players, but his talent has often been ignored due to the fact that he plays in Russia. He's a top midfielder who specialises in winning the ball back in a hurry, and it's easy to see why clubs all over Europe would be interested in his services.Juventus are often mentioned as a potential destination, and Gianluca Di Marzio's David Amoyal believes the Bianconeri could push for a move, depending on their own business during the summer:Similar to Luis, the financial aspect of any deal will be key. Zenit invested heavily in Witsel, who arrived simultaneously with Hulk for 64 million in 2012, per BBC Sport. The Russians won't demand a similar fee, but they also won't drop their price too far. This actually plays to Chelsea's advantage, as the likes of Juventus can't compete with the Blues on a purely financial level. Neither club will gift the Belgian a starting position, and given Juventus' huge depth, Witsel should like his chances of starting at Stamford Bridge more than he would in Turin.Whether Mourinho would be willing to spend more than 20 million on a player expected to sit on the bench while Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas start is debatable, however, especially withRuben Loftus-Cheek expected to play a bigger role in 2015-16.Follow @ReverschPass
