NBA Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz on Trey Burke, Mario Chalmers and More

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 22 Jul 2015

We've hit the point of the NBA offseason where fans start to clamor for any sort of basketball action. The pace of trade and free-agency rumors and acquisitions has slowed to a crawl, and summer-league competition concluded on Monday. It's not a good combination for impatient basketball enthusiasts, especially considering the opening night of the 2015-16 season is more than three months away. That said, some trade buzz has recently surfaced regarding three NBA players. Let's dig deeper into those situations andfind out how the recent news impacts the players and teams involved.Trey BurkeTrey Burke hasn't quite played up to the expectations of a ninth-overall draft pick, which he was in 2013.Offense is the 6'1" point guard's bread and butter, but he's struggled to find his shooting touch from all areas. In his rookie year, he totaled 895 points on 897 shots, and in his second season he finished with 973 points on 1,005 attempts. So it's not surprising the Utah Jazz were looking to trade the 22-year-old from their potential-filled, defensive-minded roster last month. Deseret News' Jody Genessyfirst mentioned the possibility in June, before the draft:However, according to theSalt Lake Tribune's Tony Jones, Burke has shown the team something this summer:He does still have a lot of potential. At Michigan, he was a true floor general and had total command of his offense. He'll need to develop more confidence but can still be a good NBA player, especially if he adapts to having the ball out of his hands more often.Burke and Dante Exum can become a lethal offensive/defensive point guard duo in Utah for years to come, but the former needs to work on his long-range shooting and inside-finishing ability.Presumably, that's some of what he's been doing this summer to impress the Jazz.Mario ChalmersThe Miami Heat's starting point guard from their two championship runs could be on the move this summer, according to theMiami Herald's Barry Jackson.Jackson also mentioned that 24-year-old Shabazz Napier could be on the block, but Chalmers is the main guy the Heat are shopping.Chalmers moved to the Miami bench in 2014-15, which resulted in a nightmarish shooting season. With LeBron James back in Cleveland and Dwyane Wade in the starting lineup, the 29-year-old had trouble getting good looks and knocked down only 29.4 percent of his three-point shots. That number was a far cry from his 37.3 percent rate over his first six NBA seasons. The fact Miami is looking at moving Chalmers makes sense, both roster-wise and financially.Goran Dragic is the obvious starter and will get big minutes at the 1, and he'll need only one main backup. A Chalmers-Napier tag team is excessive. Also, Chalmers is due to earn $4.3 million in 2015-16 before becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer, and unloading that contract means a considerably lower luxury-tax bill for the team. Napier's contract is only worth approximately $1.3 million,so he wouldn't make as much sense to unload.Chalmers isn't worth more than a second-round pick on the trade block but is a solid defender at the backup point guard position. During the 2014-15 season, he held pick-and-roll ball-handlers to just 0.62 points per possession, second-best among players who faced at least 200 such possessions.Brendan HaywoodOne ongoing saga of the Cleveland Cavaliers' offseason is their Brendan Haywood trade situation.Nobody in the league cares about what the 35-year-old big man offers on the court anymore, but his non-guaranteed $10.5 million contract for next season makes him an interesting piece on the trade market. Teams with enough cap space can acquire him, then waive him before August 2 and go on as if nothing ever happened.Of course, Cleveland is in a difficult place financially, so it's possible that trade partners can leverage the Cavs' need to unload Haywood into getting some value in return. As it turns out, one team has stood out in the talks for Haywood, according to Basketball Insiders' Steve Kyler. And yes, the Trail Blazers will get some value back in the form of a future draft pick.Portland is a team built for the future, so this move would make sense. And 25-and-unders Damian Lillard, Mason Plumlee, Meyers Leonard, Al-Farouq Aminu, Noah Vonleh, C.J. McCollum and MoeHarkless are bound to grow together in the next few seasons. A draft pick from the Cavs (no matter how low it is) certainly couldn't hurt the team's young core.Cleveland has had trouble acquiring an actual player for Haywood's contract, so the team might as well pick up the trade exception to help facilitate a future swap. All statistics and contract information are fromNBA.comandSpotracand updated through July 21 unless otherwise indicated.Follow @jaredtjohnson21.
