USL key to institutions sports growth

Published by Tribune on Mon, 05 Mar 2012

PRESIDENT of Private University Games, Dr. John Busari Okoro has thrown weight behind the University Sports League (USL) headed by Emmanuel Omijeh saying 'USL is good in development of sports in our universities and I am in total support of the initiative'.Okoro who is also the Director of Sports, Igbinedion University, Benin, Edo State popularly called OKADA disclosed that he was actually impressed with the way USL kick start their program and urged them not to relent in their endeavours to improve sports and also unearth talents for the country through the various universities in the country. The Director of Sports, Igbinedion University declared that, 'USL is well known and it is quite patronized by other universities in the country. Anything that brings more competitions, more sporting activities to our children in the universities I quite welcome it. So USL coming to the scene to foster or help in sports development I think is good' he stated.Okoro who also played for the then Green Eagles in the early 70s however solicits for financial backing from corporate bodies, organizations and the Federal Government so that USL can ease the burden of Nigerian universities in funding sports.'The area that I want the USL to work on is funding. They should work very hard in getting sponsorship for their programs because that would really help a lot. The Nigerian universities may not have enough funds to help USL in funding their programs. If they wait for the universities to pay them money to run their programs, USL may run into problems. So I urge them to go all out to get funds to run these laudable programs of theirs. I also solicit the support of rich companies and corporate bodies to identify with this noble course of USL.'I promised to support them in my own way because I am always interested in anything that can raise the standard of sports in our universities because it is only when we organize competitions for them (the students) that they can have the avenue of showcasing their talents which would be to the advantage of the country. There would be more talents to represent our dear country in continental and international sporting competitions', Okoro summed up.
