Afenifere Renewal Group urges govt to boost economy

Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), at the weekend, in Lagos, stressed the need for robust and productive economy. This is just as it eulogised the virtue of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, especially on his vision of transforming the western region, and political ideology. Briefing newsmen on the presentation of developmental agenda for the western Nigeria, scheduled to hold in Lagos on Tuesday, its chairman, Mr Wale Oshun, said it took the vision to transform the region, especially in the area of provision of infrastructure and free education. Oshun stressed the need for true fiscal federalism. Power, according to him, was concetrated too much at the centre to the detriment of states and local governments. Because of the system, some states of the federation now depend solely on monthly allocations from the federation account. This system has afforded non-producing states to be calling for review of revenue sharing formula. Calling for the integration of Yoruba speaking states, irrespective of their political and religion affliation, the chairman called on the government in the region to jointly embark on the projects that would be of benefit to the people, adding that Ikeja GRA is one of the great achievements of Chief Awolowo.
