Communities in Delta admonished to protect govt projects

Communities in Delta State have been enjoined to protect government projects in their localities for their own benefit.The Permanent Secretary, Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Dr (Mrs) Dorothy Edoreh-Odiase gave this advice during the pre-commissioning meeting held recently in Asaba with the traditional leaders of the various communities.The Permanent Secretary who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner for Special Duties, Millennium Development Goals, Queen Ikechuku, said that the benefiting communities were very crucial to the design, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of projects executed under the Conditional Grant Scheme (CGS), adding that the meeting with traditional leaders and stakeholders would be an immense benefit in maintaining and sustaining government projects.She enjoined contractors to involve members of the communities in the execution of projects.The permanent secretary commended the Onicha-Ugbo community for setting up a water management committee to maintain water project in the community, just as other communities were encouraged to emulate the good gesture and set up similar committee.Chief A.O. Osode, who represented the Onicha-Ugbo community, applauded what the state government was doing through the MDGs office, saying that for sustainability, a management committee was set-up to handle the water scheme.He said that the committee introduced an affordable token as fee to be paid by users which served as a source where funds were raised for maintenance and purchase of diesel for pumping of water.Speaking further, he requested, on behalf of the community, for further assistance from the office to help them reticulate water to other villages within Onicha-Ugbo community.The Commissioner for Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr Ifeanyi Osuoza, who hailed Idumuje-Ugboko community, stated that the choice of Onicha-Ugbo community would not only sustain the projects but also help the people appreciate the water more.Responding on behalf of the communities, Mr Osuoza, expressed appreciation on the activities of the state government in its people-oriented projects, while appealing that more projects be sited in the state.
