Security expert canvasses use of neighbourhood watch in Oyo

Published by Tribune on Mon, 05 Mar 2012

To combat the manance of hoodlums attacking local government council head offices in Oyo State, the use of local/traditional security guards to ward off these criminals, has been suggested. One of such people who canvased for the use of traditional security watch in council offices was a security speacialist, Mr Samuel Olarinde Ayoade.Speaking with Community News on the recent attack and vandalisation of some local government offices in the state, Ayoade said that there was the need for the authority of local government councils in the state to engage the services of traditional security guards, stressing that the recent criminal attacks on the headquarters of both Oluyole and Ido Local Government area offices had shown that the use of conventional security guards could not guaranteee adequate security for life and property as well as corperate and local government council offices. He further explained that it was very unfortunate that hoodlums were not only now operating in banks, but also local government offices.Ayoade stated that this advice became imperative, having critically examined the rationale behind the incessant attacks, saying that he could easily conclude that those perpetrating the criminal acts were those living within the community in those councils. He further explained that since the property belonged to people at the grass roots, then provision of security for facilities and edifies at the grassroots should be the responsibility of grass root dwellers.'We need the introduction of neighbourhood security watch to man our local governmrnt offices and banks. The incessant attacks on these facilities in recent times call for re-strategisation, if we want to combat the menace of hoodlum attacks on banks and other places,'he said.A traditional worhipper and an Ifa oracle, Mr Ifatomi Farinde, also supported the call for the introduction of traditional neighourhood watch and guards in public facilities. It will be recalled last week, there was a report of hoodlum attack on the headquarter of Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State while another attack took place at the Ido Local Government Area office only seven days after. Not only that, several cases of armed robbery attacks on banks in different parts of the South-West have also been reported in recent times.
